Custom Roof Design & Build — The Woodlands, TX

A ground-up custom roof design for a new construction home featuring a complex multi-hip system with standing seam metal accents, integrated skylights, and advanced ventilation engineering.

Project Details

  • Location: The Woodlands, TX 77381
  • Roof Size: 4,500 sq ft
  • Primary Material: DaVinci Bellaforte Slate (composite)
  • Accent Material: 24-gauge Galvalume standing seam
  • Duration: 8 days
  • Warranty: DaVinci Lifetime Limited + 20-year workmanship

Scope of Work

  • Roof design consultation with architect and homeowner
  • Engineered ventilation plan: balanced intake/exhaust system
  • DaVinci Bellaforte composite slate on main roof sections
  • Standing seam metal panels on patio and dormer accents
  • Three VELUX solar-powered skylights with flashing kits
  • Custom copper flashing at 2 chimney locations

The Challenge

New construction in The Woodlands requires aesthetically premium materials while Houston's weather demands performance engineering. This home featured a complex roof geometry with 14 hip intersections, 2 chimneys, 3 skylight openings, and a 600 sq ft covered patio — each requiring specialized waterproofing.

Our Design-Build Approach

We worked directly with the architect from the framing stage, providing input on roof pitch, overhangs, and ventilation pathways. DaVinci Bellaforte composite slate delivers natural slate aesthetics at 75% less weight. Standing seam metal on the patio and dormers adds architectural contrast with zero-maintenance performance. Three VELUX solar-powered skylights provide natural light with automated blinds for heat management.

Results

The composite slate provides Class 4 impact resistance at only 3 lbs per square foot (vs. 15 lbs for natural slate). The engineered ventilation system keeps attic temperatures within 15 degrees of ambient. This project demonstrates how proper design-build collaboration produces roofing that's both architecturally stunning and engineered for decades of Gulf Coast weather.

"Tell Project worked directly with our architect from day one. The composite slate looks indistinguishable from real stone but weighs a fraction. The metal accent panels gave our home exactly the modern-traditional look we wanted."

Key Takeaways

Design Collaboration

Working alongside the architect from the design phase ensured the roofing system complemented the home's architecture while meeting all structural and code requirements. Early involvement prevents costly redesigns.

Mixed-Material Expertise

Combining composite slate with standing seam metal accents requires specialized transition flashing techniques. Improper material transitions are one of the most common sources of leaks on complex roofs.

Engineered Ventilation

New construction allows for engineered attic ventilation — balanced intake and exhaust calculated for the specific roof geometry. This home's system moves air 40% more efficiently than standard code-minimum ventilation.
